The SPH Library & Graduate Communication Center 

The SPH Library & Graduate Communication Center provides a full-service learning, research, and project space by combining the functions of a library, a writing center, and a student lounge in a single community space.  This multifaceted, flexible space strives to empower students to direct their own learning by offering them a place where they can meet, talk, study, and use shared equipment and resources. 

The SPH Library & Graduate Communication Center is located on the first floor of the RAS Building.  The Study Space (E109) and Student Lounge (E139) are open Monday through Thursday from 7:00am to 7:00pm; Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 5p.m.  The Learning Resource Center (E137) is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 7:00pm; Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Library and Writing Support Staff can be reached via phone at 713-500-9121, text at 713-965-6968, or online at Ask a Librarian or Writing Consultant.


Getting Started and other Helpful Information

The UTHealth School of Public Health invites the students, faculty, and staff of UTHealth to access resources available through the UTHealth School of Public Health Library. Users also have access to libraries within the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium. This includes Texas Medical Center Library, the University of Texas M.D. Cancer Center Research Medical Library, the UTHealth School of Dentistry Library and the University of Texas Medical Brand Moody Medical Library.

In order to access print materials and e-resources, you must be a registered user and be authenticated through your institutional affiliation. SPH users may obtain access to print resources by completing the SPH Library Patron Registration Form through Online Registration or In-Person at the SPH Library. 


Online Registration: Clicking the link will take you to the online registration form.  Be sure to include your UT email address. Your patron account number will be the numbers DIRECTLY beneath the barcode on the back of your badge. Online applicants will receive notification of acceptance and approval of your patron account request. Once the form has been approved, you may check books out from the 5  libraries. Remember, your UTSPH badge is your library card and must be presented at all times. 

Walk-In or In-Person RegistrationTo activate your badge with full borrowing privileges, you can visit the SPH Library in-person. You will need complete the SPH Library Patron Registration form below and show you current UTHealth badge at the Circulation desk in the SPH Library. 

Authentication for access to Library Electronic Resources

For UTHealth SPH Library resources: You will see the Shibboleth authentication login box. Use your University credentials (i.e. your Canvas username/password) to login.

For TMC Library resources: In order to access most of the TMC Library's electronic resources, you will need to sign-in us OpenAthens. It's a user authentication and e-resources access system that acts as your gateway to electronic resources licensed by the TMC Library. Your to access full text is validated on the resource side by using your institutional login. For instructions:        . 

The steps to sign in to OpenAthens are:

  • Select a resource available through the TMC Library.
  • With most databases, you will be prompted to select an institution. If you are not sure, view the Registration page of this guide.
  • If you see screen a with "Sign in with your OpenAthens account" on the left & "Find Your Organization" on the right, search for "Texas Medical Center Library" under Find Your Organization. You will then be prompted to select your institution.
  • Enter your institutional credentials to gain access to the resource.

Tip: Clear all your browser history and use two different browsers for each library,otherwise you may not be able to access SPH Library resources  especially SPH owned ebooks  via the  TMC Library institutional login.

Group Study Room Reservation Policies:

  • Study Rooms are reserved for current SPH Students only.
  • Reservations are for a maximum time of 2 hours, once per day, 3 times per week. No renewals are allowed. Study rooms are reserved for up to 6 people.
  • Do not remove or add furniture or equipment from Study Rooms. See the Library Circulation desk if you need additional chairs.
  • The library reserves the right to reassign or cancel reservations to assure the maximum and most appropriate utilization of its space.
  • Only use Dry-Erase makers on the board. You may check these out at the SPH Library Circulation Desk.  Please return after use.
  • A room may be reassigned after 15 minutes if an individual or group who has a room reserved does not keep their reservation.  TO CANCEL, PLEASE CALL THE SPH LIBRARY at 713-500-9121
  • The Library is not responsible for items left in the study rooms.
  • Study rooms must be left in good condition for the next group using the area.
  • Eating/drinking of food /drink is prohibited.
  • Study rooms must be vacated when the library closes.
  • Study room participants will abide by all Library policies and the University of Texas Code of Conduct. Privileges may be refused or canceled for failure to follow rules and regulations.


Distance Education or Regional Campus Users

Using Library resources from off-campus is almost identical to on-campus access, as long as you start from the Library's home page. When you are off-campus, the first time a resource is used, you will be prompted to log in with your UTH email username and password. If an item is not available online:

  • The Library can make copies or scans of items we own.
  • The Library can get copies of items NOT available in our Library by borrowing from libraries throughout the U.S. There is no charge for this service.
  • Library Material Request is the request system for borrowing from other libraries or asking for scanned copies of items we own.

Alumni Services

The UT Health School of Public Health Library recognizes that many of our alumni wish to continue using the Library's collections and resources after graduation. Alumni are welcome to use the Library's print and electronic resources on-site. However, our licensing agreements with publishers specify that off-campus access to electronic resources must be limited to current UTSPH students, staff, and faculty.

UTSPH alumni may:

  • Access Library computers to utilize electronic resources. Please see the staff at the Circulation Desk to obtain computer access.
  • Use our "Ask a Librarian" service for assistance.
  • Search Primo, the online catalog.
  • Request to use the Library's Document Delivery services to request articles.
    • The charge for articles the Library owns is $11 per an article.
    • The charge for articles the Library must obtain from another library starts at $11 per an article, but may be more, depending on charges incurred.
